A TRIO of young boxers from Bury are through to the national rounds of the British development championships.

Adil Iqbal put in two explosive displays to be crowned North West novices champion in the 57k Class A division.

The 15-year-old Bury ABC fighter stopped David Turnbull, of Border City, in the second round of his first-round bout and the referee stepped in to end his final early against Sandigate ABC's Sam Walsh before the bell sounded in the third.

Iqbal's club-mate Saif Qureshi will be joining him in the pre quarter-finals at Bentley Boys Club in Tynes Tees on October 8. Qureshi earned a bye after there was no-one to contest him in the 66k Class B division.

Castlebrook High School pupil Tom Strong will complete the Bury hat-trick in the next round of the national competition for novice fighters after winning his final in the 54k Class A division on points against Brandon Fitton, of Stubbys Boxing Club.

After an even opening round, the 15-year-old, from Unsworth, stepped up the pace in the second with a flurry of combinations and his opponent was forced to take a standing eight count.

The Middleton Select ABC member maintained his advantage in the final round to earn a unanimous decision at the North West finals, which took place at Last Drop Village in Bolton.

There were close calls for two other Bury ABC boxers in the juniors section, who both lost on split decisions.

Umar Niaz missed out in the 57k Class B division to JR Gym's Connor Macfarlane, while Mohammed Harris was beaten by Joe Brown, of Preston and Fulwood, in the 54k Class B category.

In the seniors section, for fighters aged over 17 who have had under 10 fights, Abdul Haroon Bari edged out Nathan Cummiskey, of Moss Side Fire Station, by a split decision in the opening round of the 69k division.

But he lost his North West final against Centurions ABC's Zach Hall by a unanimous decision.
