FLEDGLING boxer Jake McMorine maintained his impressive progress after securing the North West novices title at the regional finals in Bolton.

The 18-year-old Prestwich fighter claimed the honours in the 60k division after stopping Mohammed Zamir in the first round of their bout at the Last Drop Village to win by a TKO.

McMorine, who is currently in his second year at Holy Cross Sixth Form College in Bury, only took up boxing two years ago and was recently made captain of the Bridgewater Amateur Boxing Club in Salford.

He says he took inspiration to win the North West title from a recent meeting with Floyd Mayweather Jnr.

“I only recently took up boxing after many years of kickboxing, but never thought I would win a prestigious title like this so soon," McMorine added.

"I’m looking forward to the national championships next month as I want to prove myself against the best in the country."

The young boxer's next match will be in the pre quarter-finals of the competition in Tyne Tees on October 9.

Lee Whitehead, Jake's coach, said: “He was recently made captain of the club because of his dedication, hard work and desire to help his club-mates.

"He’s got a natural talent and could really make a name for himself in the sport. Watch this space."
