BURY Amateur Boxing Club’s Ali Akbar Javid missed out on the chance to claim his third straight national title after losing in the semi-finals of the Cadet Championships.

The 15-year-old Boltonian lost on points by a unanimous decision to Repton ABC’s Sharheem Somerville in the 57k division in Grantham on Sunday.

Trainer Mick Jelley said: “There wasn’t a lot in it, he just didn’t have his best day.

“I thought he had the ability to win the fight, but he lost and that’s it.

“There always has to be a winner and a loser. He had won the title two years running but now needs to knuckle back down to his training and try to learn from this.”

Meanwhile, fellow Bury ABC boxer Muhammad Ali continued his fine form in the World Series of Boxing, helping the British Lionhearts to a 5-0 victory over Italia Thunder with a unanimous win on points against Manuel Cappai.

The British team top group B and can book their place in the knockout stages with victory at home to France Fighting Roosters tonight.

Elsewhere, Basil Gohar bounced back from a defeat with a unanimous victory over Glen Hickton, of Ward Degnans ABC, in the 34k division of a meeting in Newcastle last Thursday.
