AFTER a series of draws, Bury Seniors got back to winning ways when they beat bottom of the table Chorley 9-5 in the Lancashire County Red Rose League return fixture at Unsworth Hall.

Captain John Latham and partner Ian Marsh got Bury off to the best possible start, but were made to fight all the way by a determined Ian Copeland and Tom McKenna, before edging home 2&1.

Chorley then pulled off a comprehensive response with Lincoln Green and Rob Livingston eating up the course to inflict a 6&5 reversal on vice captain, Jimmy Pilkington and Peter A Dawson, to square the match at 2-2.

Bury’s middle order then kicked in with three consecutive wins. Firstly, Jim Hardman and Ted Foster saw off a battling performance from Ken Smith and Ian Hall to win 2&1.

Next up was Bury’s "dream team" of Stuart Hindley and Ged Eckersley who kept up their impeccable season long form to cruise home 5&4 against Mike English and Stuart Devalle.

Finally Steve Bracegirdle and Tim Whitehead secured victory and the match for Bury with the final putt on the 18th against Graham Dunn and Dereck Moss.

With every point a bonus in the crowded top half of the table, Bury still had much to play for, but Chorley were not going down without a fight. Derick Kenyon and Alan Lenthall found themselves locked in a dingdong struggle with Peter Jones and Frank Hulme, with neither pair begrudging the half at the end of some excellent golf.

Chorley did receive some consolation for their determined efforts when final pairing Charlie Hodgkins and Jeff Wignall eased past Rod Davies and Dave Johnson to win 2&1 at the 17th as Bury won 9-5.

The result consolidates Bury’s position of fifth in the table but was not enough to lift Chorley from the foot.
