AS the season nears its conclusion in the Bolton Tennis League, Walmer Men's A team's push for promotion from Division Two was halted by the weather last week when their match at Longsight was abandoned due to heavy rain.

It was a match they needed to win and thus the chance to push the top two teams was lost.

The men's B team were at home to Darwin TC in Division Three and as the teams braved the conditions it was the visitors who took the victory.

Steve Routledge and Andy Parton scored 2-6, 6-3 and 6-0 and Mike Davies and Wyn Lees scored 4-6, 1-6, 6-0. Phil Mansfield and Stew Hardy lost 1-6, 4-6 with a 6-0 win to see Darwin take the match by 5-4.

In Division Two of the Mixed League, Walmer A continued their winning run at home to Ellesmere A with a good start in the mixed section with wins for Jay Hardy and Hattie Morley, 6-4, Paul Biggins and Lulu Morley, 6-3 before 6-0 wins from Adam Gooddy and Lisa Morley and Dave Gerrard and Dianne Hardman.

The men's section saw two entertaining sets from Hardy and Gerrard who won 6-4, 6-4, then Gooddy and Biggins returned 6-2, 3-6.

The ladies lost only one set to keep up the pressure as Walmer won 68-32 to stay in second position in the table.

In the same division, Walmer B lost their match at Longsight with Stew Hardy and Pam Leach the only winners in the mixed section at 6-5.

Rick Morley and Mike Davies shared their sets 6-5, 5-6, but Phil Mansfield and Stew Hardy lost both their sets.

The Walmer ladies were unable to gain any ground as the team lost, to stay in a perilous position near the bottom of the league.
