BURY Hockey Club enjoyed a successful weekend, with three of their four sides in action recording victories.

The ladies' second team remained on course for the Division Three title in the Greater Manchester Women's Hockey Association after completing a 6-1 win at home to Oldham 3s.

Helen Beard continued her fine end-of-season form, the forward taking her tally for the season to 14 after scoring four goals in the opening half to set up the comfortable victory.

Within moments of the opening push back, Beard had found the net with a sublime first goal, beating her marker tight on the touchline before storming into the box and lifting the ball over the keeper.

Beard added a second from close range before firing in the rebound after Sophie Foreman's short corner was saved.

Oldham pulled a goal back following a neat move and powerful finish but the comeback was shortlived as Beard swept in her fourth of the game after being teed up by Lorna Wroe.

Emma Taylor capped a fine individual performance after the break, scoring with a powerful drive, before vice-captain Lisa Davies rounded off the scoring, converting a short corner following Karen Nicholl’s pass.

The ladies took a four-point lead into a showdown with second-placed Salford University last night, knowing victory would clinch the title.

It was not such a good weekend for the ladies' third team, however, as they went down 12-0 at home to Royden.

The men's first and second teams rounded off their seasons on a high with wins against sides from Golborne.

Bury won the battle of the firsts 2-0, while the second team, who were already relegated, secured a 5-3 victory away from home.

Mattie Birch had an early drag flick stopped on the line, while the visitors suffered a blow at the end of the first half when a defender was forced off with an injury and they had to play the remainder of the game with 10 men.

Youngster Sam Plant capitalised with two goals in the second half.

A sweeping move ended when Birch exchanged passes with James Larmett and the midfielder squared the ball to Plant for an easy tap in.

And as Golborne tired Plant rounded off the scoring with a reverse a deflected reverse stick finish.

The result ensured the first team finished the season fourth in Division Three North of the North West Men's Hockey League.

The second team's relegation from Division Five North South had already been confirmed before Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Golborne seconds.

But they finished with a flourish, getting the better of an eight-goal thriller.

Having conceded an early goal form a penalty stroke, Bury roared back and stand-in skipper Adam Johnson levelled with a first-time strike high into the net.

Soon after Bury found themselves in front as an aerial pass from Siraj Raza again found Johnson in a threatening position, with the forward converting the chance low into the bottom corner.

The striker then sealed his hat trick with a tremendous finish from a difficult angle, as Bury took a 3-1 lead into half time.

The home side mounted a come-back in the second period, however, levelling with two quick goals.

But a goal from midfielder Rob Fogwill edged Bury back in front and the points were sealed when Chris Lowe defected in a fifth goal.
