BURY Clarion riders took the team, individual and junior titles at the National Clarion Hill Climb Championships after a storming set of rides at the Newport Shropshire CC hill climb in Ironbridge.

In the popular event, which doubled up as the national clarion championships, Joe Cadwallader was fastest finisher of Bury's team of three, completing the course in 3mins 42secs to take third place overall, just 29 seconds down on winner Matt Garthwaite, of Rhino Valley RT.

Cadwallader's time also ensured he was second fastest veteran and leading clarion rider, to claim the individual title.

Out of the 44-strong field, there were 23 riders from across the country competing for the national clarion honours.

Bury's other two riders, Dave Stammers and Francis Woodcock, completed a one-two-three finish in the clarion championships to claim the team crown in some style.

They also won the overall team title on the day, beating second-placed Wolverhampton Wheelers' aggregate time by 24 seconds.

Stammers was fifth-place overall, following his time of 3:44.

And Woodcock followed up his juvenile victory in the recent Ramsbottom Rake with the national clarion junior title after finishing in 3:49.

The 14-year-old beat off competition from riders two years his senior to win the crown, finishing 17 seconds faster than Newport Shropshire's Charlie Fisher, aged 16, in second.

Woodcock also finished third in the clarion race and seventh overall on the day.

Elsewhere, the club's leading female rider, Charlotte Gorman, continued her run of impressive recent results, posting times of 2:53 and 5:44.6, respectively, in the Nelson Wheelers and North Lancashire Road Club hill climbs.

Stammers also rode the Nelson Wheelers event, posting 2:36 to claim 14th place.
