Bury AC’s athletes brought home an impressive haul of medals from the M60 Miniathlon event at Salford Met.

The Miniathlon requires each athlete to compete in a running, jumping and throwing event, with the times and distances converted into points, which are converted to UK Athletics awards.

Star of the day was James Coghlan, who took first place overall in the under-13s boys’ competition with 180 points and a gold award.

Coghlan has shown outstanding potential in multi-events this summer and again demonstrated his all-round talents at Salford. After a 13.06secs time in the 100metres, he leapt 4.28m in the long jump and threw the javelin more than 28m to score a resounding victory.

Alex Bennett combined three solid performances for 109 events and a bronze award, while Jess Carroll narrowly missed out on a medal in the girls’ event by just two points with a time of 11.03 for the 80m and a fine long jump of 3.36m.

Bury’s u11s girls have been in superb form all summer and, once again, they shone. Grace Goodsell took second place overall with 148 points and Charlotte Farnworth third with 142 points, both securing gold awards. Goodsell won the 75m with a time of 11.04 and leapt 3.61m in the long jump. Farnworth ran strongly to record a time of 2:00 for the 600m and jumped 3.43m metres in the long jump. Josie Carroll also ran well in the 600m gaining a time of 2:20, adding good performances in the chest push and long jump to score 76 points and bronze award.

Not to be outdone, the u11s boys also took silver and bronze medals in the overall competition through Francis Woodcock and Patrick Clarke. Woodcock’s performance was highlighted by a massive 30m in the vortex throw, while Clarke ran well in the 75m sprint with a time of 11.07 and a throw of 6.50m in the chest push.

Sebastian Fletcher also secured a gold award with 146 points through good performances in the 600m and vortex, while James Wilcock sprinted and threw well to secure 100 points and bronze award.

Bury’s athletes complete their track and field season on Sunday with the final Cheshire League fixture at Cheshire Oaks.
