A SMALL group of Bury athletes made the journey across the Pennines to compete in the Northern Athletic Indoor Championships for under-15s and u13s at Sheffield.

The club had three competitors in the heats of the u15s girls' 60m sprint. Grace Goodsell won heat six in a new personal best time of 8.25secs, ahead of Katherine Townsend, who also set a new best of 8.71 to finish fourth. Hattie Vaughan produced a run of 8.80 to finish fifth in heat eight.

Goodsell clocked 8.26 to finish second in her semi-final and qualify for the final, but her speed dipped in the medal race as she clocked 8.32 to finish seventh.

Patrick Clarke was sixth in heat three of the u15s boys' 200m in a time of 28.82.

Townsend set a new best time of 29.27 to finish seventh in heat seven of the u15s girls' race.

Daisy Worthington set a new personal best of 2mins 29.45secs to finish second in heat one of the u15s girls' 800m, then claimed fourth in the semi-final with a brave run of 2:35.67, just missing out on a place in the medal race.

She also competed in the 60m hurdles, setting a new personal best of 10.32 to take second place in heat two, before finishing sixth in a time of 10.52 in the semi-finals.

Vaughan set a new personal best of 2.50m in the pole vault to take sixth place, equalling the height of the fourth-placed vault but losing out on count back.

Clarke recorded a season’s best leap of 4.33 to take 16th in the u15s boys' long jump.

In the girl’s event, Goodsell qualified for the final after setting a new personal best of 4.76m to take fifth in her semi-final.

She then produced a massive jump of 4.97m to finish fourth in the final, a leap that moves her up to 12th in the UK indoor rankings for her age group.

Bury also had a good representation of athletes at the fourth Sale Open meeting, which took place the previous weekend at the Sportscity indoor arena in Manchester.

Marvin Edwards was fifth in the senior men's 60m sprint final with a season’s best time of 7.19.

In the under-17s boys' race, Emmanuel Mufakazi was second in 7.55, just one hundredth of a second ahead of Bury team-mate Hashim Shah in third, with both athletes recording personal bests.

Goodsell was fourth in her heat of the u15s girls' event, clocking 8.27. Vaughan was third in 8.68 and Worthington was second with a personal best of 8.75.

Worthington followed that up by finishing third in the 60m hurdles, posting a time of 11.0.

In the 200m, Mariella Digioia set a new best of 29.0 to finish third in her under-20s women's race.

Chelsey Lee was also third in her heat in a season’s best time of 33.93.

James Coghlan, running in the u17s boys, set a new personal best of 24.46 to finish third.

Jenna Allen-Cartwright recorded a season’s best of 28.38 to also finish third in her race.

Vaughan was rewarded with a new personal best of 28.39 as she won her race in the u15s girls' competition. Vaughan also finished joint second in the Vault Manchester pole vault competition the previous day, going over at 2.42m.

Viola Melingi finished third in her senior women's race in the 600m, setting a new personal best of 1:49.95.

In the u17s women's race, Teegan Brady set a new personal best of 1:55.86 to finish fourth.

Goodsell was Bury’s only competitor in the Sale Open field events, posting 4.60 in the long jump.

The next open meeting will take place on Sunday, March 6.
