BURY athletes Molly Whitlow and Hannah Kelly produced some stunning displays last weekend to win medals on the county stage.

St Gabriel's year 10 pupil Hannah, aged 15, was quick off the blocks to win a sprint double at the Cheshire and Greater Manchester County Championships, while Bury Grammar School for Girls pupil Molly was also on the podium twice at the Yorkshire County Athletics Championships.

Molly, who is in year 9 at Bury Grammar, competed in Yorkshire in the discus and hammer for her club Halifax Harriers.

She fought off stiff competition from a strong field, to win the discus on Saturday, claiming gold and the county title with her very first throw of 24.47m to set a new personal best in competition.

The following day she won silver in the hammer.

Molly said: “I love athletics and have learned a lot both from the teachers at Bury Grammar and from my athletics club trainers.

"Who knows, maybe I can go on to compete at national level in the future.”

Hannah continued her quest for national success after stepping up an age group to compete in the under-17s 100m and 200m events at the Cheshire and Greater Manchester County Championships.

She won the 100m in 12.53secs and the 200m in 25.14s – the eighth fastest time in the UK at u17s level this year.
