WHAT Bury Athletic Club lacked in numbers they made up for in quality to finish fifth at Oldham in the third meeting of the Youth Development League’s upper age group.

There were no Bury competitors in the men’s under-20s events, but three of the club’s women excelled.

There was a double victory in the 1500m, with Sophie Whittaker winning the A race in a new best time of 5mins 5.1secs.

Lauren Booth won the B race, with her finishing time of 5:24.5, only a couple of seconds away from her personal best.

And Chelsey Lee was third in the 100m with a time of 16secs.

Bury had a larger group of u17s athletes and team manager Donna Cartwright said she was delighted with their attitude to competition.

Bury enjoyed a double in the 100m with Hashim Shah winning the A race (11.8) and James Coghlan taking the B (12.2).

The competition was too hot for Shah in the 200m and he had to settle for fourth in the A race (24.6), but Coghlan made it a clean sweep in the B, winning in 24.6.

Coghlan then went on to take third in the javelin with a best throw of 30.39m.

Marcus Dey ran an impressive new best time of 2:07.5 to finish second in a very competitive 800m.

Oliver Makinson dominated the field in the 3,000m, winning easily in a new best time of 9:32.5.

Shah, Coghlan, Dey and Makinson then combined to win the 4x100m relay in 49.2.

The u17s girls had a busy afternoon.

Chloe Fairhurst competed in the 100m (sixth, 15.7), 80m hurdles (fourth, 18.6) and B long jump (third, 3.35).

Jenna Allen-Cartwright was sixth in the A 200m (28.6), second in the A 300m in a new best time of 44.8 and fourth in the A discus (13.46m).

Lucy Alcock performed well to finish second in the 1500m (5:26.0) and fourth in the A long jump (3.14m).

The four of them teamed up to finish second in the 4x100m relay in a time of 56.6.

Four Bury AC members competed in the 800m in the Trafford Grand Prix at Longford Park and all were rewarded with fast times.

In the senior men’s B race, Ben Coop ran strongly to take fourth.

He ducked under the two-minute barrier for the second time this season, finishing in 1:59.63.

In a close-run contest, less than a second split the first four finishers.

Benn Heywood, competing in the senior men’s E race, set a season’s best and his fastest run for two years.

His time of 2:05.4 secured him fourth place in another blanket finish with less than two seconds covering the first six runners.

In the u15s B race, Francis Woodcock shaved 0.3 seconds off his previous best to take ninth in a high-quality field, finishing in 2:19.70.

With another year to compete in this age category. the future is looking very promising for this young athlete.

Another member of the u15s team to excel in her race was Daisy Worthington, who dominated the D race, finishing more than 10 metres clear.

Worthington was rewarded for her brave performance with a new personal best of 2:21.86, nearly two seconds faster than her old mark.
