RADCLIFFE Borough notched a first win of the season when they came from behind to beat Atherton Collieries 2-1 on Tuesday in the FA Cup preliminary round.

The result was even more impressive with Boro having to play the entire game with striker Dennis Sherriff as stand-in goalkeeper with young stopper Sam Andrew suspended.

Sherriff had to pick the ball out of his net first at Stainton Park on 32 minutes when Paul Atherton gave the North West Counties League Division One side the lead.

But just four minutes later, James Mullineux levelled when he finished off from a corner.

After the break it remained fairly even but Boro edged ahead on 57 minutes thanks to a screamer from Chris Thompson for his first goal of the season.

Boro held on and progress to the first qualifying round and a trip to Burscough on September 14.

Colls hit the bar twice in the replay and will take heart from their displays against a Boro side two divisions higher in both ties.

The first meeting on Saturday at Alder Street ended all square at 1-1.

Boro, who went into the clash off the back of four straight league defeats, fell behind just two minutes in when Mark Truffers scored from a free-kick just outside the box.

Colls used the slope and wind to their favour to control the game after their early opener.

In contrast, the visitors struggled to test former Boro keeper Joe Brobbin in the Colls goal.

A triple substitution on 64 minutes saw Simon Carden, Josh Bardsley and Dennis Sherriff replaced by Dave Sherlock, Luke Walker and Tom Ingham and 11 minutes later, the scores were level when Danny White netted from eight yards out.

Tuesday’s replay meant the postponement of the Manchester Premier Cup first round tie at Conference National side Hyde and this game will now take place on Tuesday.

That rearrangement means the Evo-Stik Division One North trip to Darlington, scheduled for Wednesday, will be postponed.

Boro return to league action before the Hyde clash with Mossley the visitors to Stainton Park on Saturday.
