MANAGER Danny Johnson insists he is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite seeing his Radcliffe Borough side progress in both cup competitions against tough opposition this week.

The Belvoir Stadium outfit eased to comfortable wins in the first rounds of the FA Trophy and Manchester Premier Cup with a 2-1 victory against Droylsden and 3-1 success over Curzon Ashton respectively, and the boss believes the club is heading in the right direction after a stuttering start to the campaign.

“We are definitely on the right track and making lots of progress which is what I set out to do when I took over the club,” he told the Radcliffe Times.

“But I’m not going to get too carried away or over-excited just yet.

“I want us to keep our feet firmly on the ground and let the performances and results do the talking because things can change very quickly.”

Johnson was delighted with the financial boost Boro will receive following the success against league rivals Droylsden.

“The £2,000 prize money covers four or five weeks of expenses for the lads,” he said.

“That’s massive for the football club and just keeps us moving forward.”

A brace from 33-year-old front man Steve Foster proved the difference against Droylsden, while a double from midfielder Matt Davies and a first goal of the season for Elliot Rokka were enough to see off a strong Curzon Ashton side.

With Tom Hulme, Ric Smith and Sam McMahon all chipping in with goals of late, Johnson believes he now has enough firepower in the side to compete across all competitions.

“The goals are coming from all angles now and that’s really pleasing.

“The whole team has been magnificent and the performance against Curzon, who are playing well in the Conference North, was exceptional,” said Johnson.

“We matched them toe-for-toe and played some really good football.

“The Boro players weren’t afraid and took the game to them.

“We probably should have put Droylsden to bed sooner but the pleasing thing is that we are creating chances.

“We just need to start finishing the job off much earlier.”

With just one defeat in five league games, Johnson turns his attention back to First Division North action with a trip to Trafford on Saturday.

Boro will meet up with former defensive duo Danny Lafferty and Danny Lambert, who moved to Shawe View in the summer, with Johnson looking to get back to winning ways following a 2-1 defeat to Glossop last time out.

“The two Danny’s have be in and out of the Trafford team of late, but I wish them both every success as they were stalwarts at Radcliffe for many years,” he said.

“But we’ve got to concentrate on getting ourselves back to winning ways and progressing up the table. It would be nice to get another unbeaten run going.”
