RADCLIFFE Borough manager Bill Prendergast has challenged mercurial striker Abou Sanogo to add consistency to his game after handing him the captain's armband.

Jack Hindle has been stripped of the team captaincy after being sent off in Saturday's 5-1 win at home to Goole.

He will remain club captain but Prendergast says Sanogo will lead the team on the pitch for the foreseeable future.

The pair combined well on Tuesday night, with Hindle setting up Sanogo for his third goal of the week in the 2-2 draw at Colwyn Bay.

The Boro boss praised the attitude of both players after that battling performance, which saw Boro go behind twice but leave North Wales with a point, extending a run of three league games with a defeat in October.

"Jack Hindle knows our values at the club and he fell short of them on Saturday," explained Prendergast.

"He got himself involved in something he shouldn't have, lashed out at an opponent and got a deserved red card.

"It is something Abou actually did earlier in the season and I left him out of the side for a handful of games.

"He learned his lesson well from that and Jack accepted that he had to receive a similar kind of punishment that would send out a message to the rest of the team.

"We had a good chat and Jack agreed that this was the best course of action."

Since Sanogo came back from his enforced absence he has been banging in the goals, and Boro's results have picked up as a consequence.

The former Northwich Victoria front man added another couple against Goole on Saturday after coming off the bench and led from the front in Tuesday night's battling display.

"Abou was fantastic at Colwyn Bay," said Prendergast.

"I needed a captain who would be on the pitch. Jack is going to be suspended for the next three games, so the challenge was for Abou to show he could do the job, and he did.

"It was not just his forward play and the goal he scored, he put in a real shift for the team.

"Abou was continually tracking back to help out and set the tone for the performance.

"He was also encouraging his team-mates, showing the attributes you would expect from a captain, so he really vindicated my decision.

"The test will be to see if he can show me that week in, week out."

Prendergast was also full of praise for his opposite number, Colwyn boss Paul Moore, after Tuesday's draw.

"It was great to see another football team with the same value, who wanted to play football rather than fightball," he said.

"Paul was someone who was recommended to me when I was looking for an assistant in the summer.

"He made it clear he wanted to be a manager and I am glad to see him doing well at what is a lovely club."

The four points from two games moved Boro up to 11th place in Evo-Stik First Division North. They have another two games this week, at second-bottom Ossett Albion on Saturday and at home to second-placed Bamber Bridge on Tuesday.
