A SUPERB strike from substitute Steve Maden was enough to secure United’s first back-to-back victories in the league since the opening two games of the season on Tuesday night.

Rammy started with an unchanged line-up from the side which beat Formby 1-0 on Merseyside at the weekend.

Maden, returning from a three-match ban, made an immediate impression when he replaced Andy Sensale.

United took a deserved lead on 32 minutes when Bernard Morley’s cross was headed home by Eddie O’Neill.

But they surrendered their advantage when Alsager’s rangey striker Dean Williams headed home from a corner.

The Riverside men’s winner came on 65 minutes when persistent pressing by O’Neill forced an error from the Alsager defence and when Morley’s shot was defelected, Maden was there to supply the finish within seconds of his introduction.

Caretaker manager Paul Williams was pleased with a second successive win.

“For the second game in a row we put in a solid performance and that is exactly what we wanted,” he said. “Other than the odd chance they had, I felt comfortable all evening that we would keep control.

“We are running a system now that the lads are understanding and it is causing the opposition problems.”

United travel to Glossop North End on Saturday.
