RAMSBOTTOM United saw off one of non-league football’s historic names in Northwich Victoria to set up an FA Trophy second qualfying round trip to Stafford Rangers.

The Rams won 4-2 at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium to seal their progress on Saturday in front of a crowd of more than 200.

Jon Robinson was the home hero with a brace on the day, with other goals from Lee Gaskell and Ryan Moore completing the scoring.

Rammy started brightly and, despite the absence through injury of influential skipper Andy Dawson, just 13 minutes in they had established a two-goal lead.

The deadlock was broken by Gaskell on seven minutes when he drove into the penalty area from the left before firing home from 15 yards.

It was 2-0 soon after when Robinson latched on to the end of a low Dominic Smalley cross to bundle the ball home at the far post.

It may have been even more, had the Rams not been denied a penalty when Phil Dean was felled in the box, but his appeals were waved away.

Vics did get the benefit of a penalty award on 22 minutes but Grant Shenton pulled off a fine save to keep the score at 2-0.

Vics saw a fierce deflected shot cannon back off the United bar before the tables were turned and the visitors were twice thankful for the woodwork coming to their aid.

Another penalty went to Vics and Lee Dodgson netted with his second attempt to make it 2-1.

But, as half-time approached, Rammy regained a two-goal cushion when Robinson nodded home Dean’s cross.

The second half saw more Rammy domination and Dean was denied by a scarmbled clearance before Robinson had a header cleared off the line.

On 66 minutes, Vics reduced the arrears for a second time when substitute Barry Shuttleworth marked his introduction for the Rams with an own goal – after trying to clear a goal-bound effort.

It was an open tie before another United substitute, Moore, sealed the home side’s progress when he blasted home on 77 minutes.

The Rams return to Evo-Stik Division One North league duty on Saturday when they visit New Mills (3pm), before another away game at Burscough on Tuesday (7.45pm).

The next FA Trophy clash is scheduled for Saturday, October 27.
