Sweeney tears up Bury contract

First published in Bury FC

BURY midfielder Peter Sweeney has torn up his contract and has left Gigg Lane by mutual consent.

The club confirmed on its website that the 28-year-old central-midfielder had decided to leave for personal reasons and had taken up a contract at League Two side AFC Wimbledon.

Sweeney arrived at Gigg Lane in August, 2010, and made a total of 95 appearances. He scored five times for the club, including last campaign’s goal of the season - a wonder strike at Walsall.

Youngsters Liam Boswell and Luke McCarthy have also left the club after their contracts were mutually cancelled.

It's disgraceful the way Sweeney has been treated. I for one will not be returning to Gigg until this current management shower has gone. It's almost as if Blackwell bears a grudge against the club and is deliberately trying to dismantle it!

Thompson extends til the end of the season............WH
Y??????????

Sweeney going just sums things at the club up and is just another nail in this seasons coffin.
To be honest i don't blame him for wanting to go, think i'd be naffed off at seeing the most ineffective CM i've ever seen (Thompson), playing before me week in week out.

Other than Blackwell is there anyone in the world who thinks that the desperately ordinary Zac Thompson is a better player
than Peter Sweeney?I doubt whether even Thompson himself believes it.More evidence that Blackwell has lost the plot.Only two of the players brought in by Blackwell,Doherty and Poleon, have been league one standard and we've gone ten games without a win with no end in sight to this dismal run.I would put Blackwell on gardening leave,we clearly can't afford to get rid of him, and put Sodje in charge for the rest of the season.Anyway thanks to Peter Sweeney for all his efforts at the club he's been a great player to watch and long after everyone has forgotten about Blackwell we'll remember with fondness a wonderfully stylish and effective playmaker.

Yes the fans know that Peter Sweeney is a great passer of the ball but this decission is for personal reasons and not a footballing issue.

We can only hope that when the loan is paid off and the transfer embargo is lifted we can sign a suitable replacement

First of all i would like to thank Peter Sweeney for all of his efforts/goals during the last 2 campaigns and wish him well at Lowly Wimbledon.

I must say that i was rather shocked to read of his sudden departure.

How does this decision to rip up his contract benefit Bury fc from a financial perspective?.

Well he's off the wage bill, but no fee was paid and we have lost a good player who is a creator of goals.

Whatever his personal reasons for him leaving i have to respect that until i learn different from other sources.

I think the directors will have to follow Morecambe's initiative and allow our supporters in for free for the rest of the season.

This is the final straw for me in a very long and agonising season where we have won just 4 games/26.

I can't see many fans stomaching much more of this.

I am now fearing administration although i won't lose any sleep if Blackie departs.

I'm presuming that other Bury fc players will now follow Peter's move and just tear up their contracts.(Bishy/Hea
ly?.

I think it sets an unwanted president for disgruntled and unhappy players to initiate a move via their agent like in the case of Mozzy.

Sorry KB i can't get too excited about signing up Thomo for the rest of the season how is he a better player than Sweeney?.

You can't allow supporters in for free til the end of the season Eileen......it's not exactly fair on the season ticket holders is it. Maybe as a 1 off though.

Personal reasons.....he's a professional football who's been plying his trade at Bury for atleast 2 seasons now......it's not as though he's in Spain or something. All of a sudden (when he's not playing regulary) he says a few boo-hoos to the board about how unhappy he is with certain things....and hey presto, no problem Sweens you shoot off down south to Wimbledon a la Barker.....we're too soft a club at times.

shaken, until I hear it from the horses mouth, that is Sweeney himself,I remain sceptical about whether his departure was for personal reasons or whether Blackwell just wanted rid.Whatever the case Peter Sweeney, who was our most skilful and creative player by a country mile has been apallingly treated by Barker.Eileen although I hope you are right I don't think there's a cat in hell's chance of the lazy, fat mercenary Healy following Sweens example and ripping up his contract. What club other than Bury would be barmy enough to sign such a useless, idle waste of space?

It's often the case that when a player sees another loan player coming in and taking his place he will act.

When Belford saw Carson come in he demanded a loan move to Southend United last season.

For whatever reasons and we aren't privy to what really goes on behind closed doors he's fallen out of favour with the second hand car salesman/Klever Kev.

Shaken i was just kidding with regard to the comment about letting the fans in for free.

Sorry it's just my sense of humour but the fans will deffo vote with their feet and stay away until the last rites have been served on our league 1 existence.

Signing players like Thomo,Ebanks-landell just show how desperate we are as a club.

Not players that will lift us up the table. We need to try something new but perhaps that might have to wait til after the embargo is lifted.

Eileen ..... what was I saying just a few months ago ? I was saying that the only way forward for Bury FC was if the current board tore up their contracts and resigned en-masse. With new directors, new ideas, fresh energy, increased enthusiasm and perhaps a bit of investment, things might change for the better. Have you realised that this is the only solution to the current drastic state of affairsEileen ? p.s. by an unwanted president ...... do you mean Robert Mugabe ?
