Bury Times: Friends release lanterns in memory of factory accident teenager Friends release lanterns in memory of factory accident teenager

HUNDREDS of people turned out to a vigil in memory of a 16-year-old boy who died in an accident while working at a factory.

Cameron Minshull suffered a serious head injury after he became trapped in machinery at a factory in Huntley Mount Road, Bury, on Tuesday.

Friends and family gathered outside his former school, Radcliffe Riverside High, on Friday evening to pay their respects and release lanterns.

Cameron, from Unsworth, Bury, had been working as an apprentice at the factory for three weeks.

Greater Manchester Police and the Health And Safety Executive have started a joint investigation into the incident.

In a statement, Cameron’s family said: “We have lost a very precious part of our lives and there are no words that can describe how we are feeling.

“Cameron was a much loved son, brother, nephew , grandson, great-grandson and a friend to many. He will leave a big hole in many people's hearts.

“We just ask at this terrible time if we could have some space to grieve as a family.”

Such a tragic accident.
My thoughts are with his friends and family.

But.... why do people think it's acceptable to litter the country with burning baskets of paper and wire as a mark of respect?

Disgusting and selfish behavior from people who should know better, the council should fine the lot of them!

I am absolutely disgusted and dismayed to read the comment left by Phil, paying his respects and quickly snatching it back. If he saw Cameron's Mum and Dad last night and the comfort they have taken from the out-pouring of love, support and compassion from friends and strangers alike. Comments like this are hurtful, insensitive and you are a complete moron without a genuine and sympathetic bone if your body. I have never felt the need to comment on anything before but you have enraged me to report you and leave this comment. This is a terrible and tragic event to a much loved son, brother, friend and much more to many people and it has united a community in love and support for all that this has affected.

You're confusing my respects for family and friends with the mass littering that has been done in his name.

Since when has it been a sign in our culture that we show respect by launching burning bundles of paper and wire into the sky to land who knows where?

Why is mass littering a mark of respect or rememberance?

There are many ways to remember and celebrate his life without having to resort to mass littering!
How about a candle lit vigil?
How about a benefit event? etc.
(I'm sure there will be something).

Property and livestock ARE damaged and killed by these Chinese lanterns. Do you think the owners of those will be thinking respectfully and reverently about a life tragically cut short?
I think not!

In some ways I have to agree with Phil. I am all for people showing their respect and in whichever way they choose to express their feelings, be it by laying flowers, leaving ballooons, lighting candles etc.

However, what I don't agree with is the amount of rubbish they left behind. That nicnath11 and PaulaW41, is disgusting. Why could they not take it with them and dispose of it appropriately?

I didn't know Cameron but my thoughts are with his family and friends at this very tragic time and I hope one day they will be able to find comfort in the memories they have of him.

Rest in peace Cameron.

if you were that bothered phil and so concerned about the enviroment and livestock how about doing something constructive and go pick it up yourself do your bit for the community, i think the last thing these people thought of was to pick stuff up, or even thought of lets go running after a lantern that could end up miles away so we can dispose if it correctly!!! no the outpouring of grief was immense

The majority of people there last night were grieving children. Stop going on about litter and burning paper and let them pay their respects in anyway they wish. If they were that bad for wildlife or the environment they wouldn't sell them would they

So let me get this straight: a fellow human being has died, and you wish to complain about the litter caused by a memorial conducted by his loved ones? Two words: Time and place; and maybe, as it is a new year, you should give some consideration to sorting your life out......or maybe you just were having a joke. As said before: Time and place; a lad's life ended.

I passed Riverside on my home on Friday.

The Metrolink was full off kids with flowers, cards, and lanterns, so i decided to get off at Radcliffe and see what was going on at the school.

I have never seen such a tribute paid to another human in my life. Us grown ups often say unkind things about the youth of today, but, youth of today who where at Riverside on Friday, take a bow - you did him proud - i hope his parents where there to witness your tribute - well done.

As for Phil and the Lanterns - Get a life!!!!

A tragic death and my heartfelt condolences go to his family and friends. This young lad, just starting out in life as a worker and a terrible accident like this ends his short life. RIP Cameron and once again, my sincere condolences to the family at this very sad time.

I think people like Phil ought to keep their petty minded opinions to themselves. Those Chinese lanterns don't have wires for one, and for two A popular young man has died and he really shouldn't have, and his friends want to show their respects to his family. The 'mess' isn't a problem, it's a display of affection and should stay where it is.
