Volunteers are being sought for a new project in Ramsbottom which aims to provide support for young people.

The Ramsbottom’s Young People’s Project is led by Peter Cooper, who lives in Shuttleworth, and he is looking for people who are seeking volunteering opportunities, or who want to be part of the committee which supports them. The project hopes to provide advice on education, employment and training, as well as other activities during the summer holidays such as sports. The scheme has received support from the Bury Third Sector Development Group, who will provide free training and support to volunteers, and Six Town Housing and Bury Youth Service.

Mr Cooper said there was a need for such a project, because of minimal provision for young people through schools or privately-run clubs.

The 40-year-old said: “Ramsbottom has got more 10-19 year olds than anywhere else in the borough, and we are hoping to recruit people who are interested in setting up this project.

“Ramsbottom is seen as quite an affluent area and some of that funding does not come up to the north of the borough, and we hope by setting up this group we can compete for the funding.”

He hopes that the group will be able to successfully apply for funding to support their activities to try and engage young people.

Mr Cooper added: “Ramsbottom is good if you are aged four or 24, with local parks and events such as the chocolate festival, but if you are 14 it can be quite isolating and there is not a lot to do.

“Any volunteer is welcome, even if you can contribute an hour a month or an hour a year. All help is welcome.”

A meeting for people who are interested will be take place on Tuesday, September 24 at the Ramsbottom British Legion Club on Central Street.
