BURY showed equal measures of class and resolve to knock League One Crewe out of the Capital One Cup.

Chucks Aneke and Harry Davis scored early and late in the tie for the Cheshire outfit, but they were undone by a composed display from the Shakers.

Summer signings Shaun Beeley and Richard Hinds scored their first goals in Bury colours, either side of a Shaun Harrad penalty to send Kevin Blackwell’s new-look side into the second round.

Bury did well to steady themselves as Crewe threatened to blow them away in the opening 10 minutes.

The visitors’ forward three launched a number of successful forays in behind the Shakers defence, with the first leading to their opener after only five minutes.

Frontman Ajay Leitch-Smith managed to make it to the byline and when Beeley failed to cut out his pull back Aneke had plenty of time and space in the box to slot his side-footed shot into the top corner.

Bury slowly found a foothold in the game though and Beeley levelled with a volley into the top corner on 19 minutes after latching on to a fluffed clearance.

The Shakers’ confidence soared after the equaliser and they dominated the remainder of the half.

Harrad had already headed an effort just over by the time he stepped up to slot home a 28th-minute penalty, given following a tug by Anthony Grant on Bury centre-back Hinds.

And it could have been three before the break, with both Craig Jones and Ashley Grimes going close with speculative shots. But the Shakers didn’t have to wait long to hammer home their advantage, with Hinds flicking home from close range just three minutes after the break.

Bury looked to be coasting for the remainder of the second half before Ryan Colclough found his way on to a through ball and was brought down by Rob Lainton for a penalty.

The Shakers stopper was lucky to escape with a only a yellow, but was powerless to stop the resulting spot kick as Harry Davis sent him the wrong way.

Cue a late Crewe rally but an Aneke strike over the bar in the 83rd minute was the closest they came to forcing the tie into extra-time.
