How Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers helped bring me to Bury - David Flitcroft

Bury Times: Brendan Rodgers Brendan Rodgers

LIVERPOOL manager Brendan Rodgers is playing a key role in the Bury revolution, according to manager David Flitcroft.

While the club’s backroom staff were treated to an “educational” trip to watch the Premier League side train last week, Flitcroft has revealed how his long-time pal was instrumental in his decision to take on the Shakers job.

“Brendan was one of the first people to get in touch with me when I was sacked at Barnsley,” he said.

“He sent me a text wishing me well and told me not to give up on my beliefs just to get back into football.

“He said the right job would come along and I think it was the next day I spoke to the Bury chairman.

“We hit it off straight away and I was so excited about the project.

“Obviously dropping down to League Two from the Championship was a big step, but I remembered Brendan’s advice.

“When he went to Reading, the club wasn’t ready to buy into the changes he wanted to make and it didn’t work out for him.

“But Swansea were ready, as were Liverpool when he moved there, and look at what has happened at both those clubs.

“I knew Bury and the chairman were ready to buy into my vision, so it was a chance I could not pass up.

“So I guess Brendan played a big part in bringing me to Bury.”

Rodgers has continued to be instrumental in Flitcroft's coaching career, inviting him and his coaches Chris Brass and Ben Futcher down to watch a training session last Thursday.

"I consider Brendan to be one of the best technical coaches in the game today, not just in this country but throughout the world, so we are very lucky to be able to pick his brain, and boy did we do that.

"We peppered him with questions all day.

"The way i see it, I can't be asking my players to continually improve when I am not willing to do the same.

"So it was a real education for us and we picked up lots of ideas that we will be incorporating in our day-to-day work.

"To see players like Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez so committed to the ideas and opportunities being put across to them in the training session was awe inspiring.

"And if it is good enough for them it is certainly good enough for us."

All good positive news just wished he had selected another club to view these training methods although i like Brendan Rogers and also believe he is one of the best coaches certainly in England.

What a great piece and a nice insight into David's thoughts as it applied to the coaching and man management. Brendon Rogers is excellent Coach. I have such respect for a Man who stands by his beliefs and is not shy to state it on the TV. He certainly has the best of the players he has and without question is a top guy.
David certainly could have went to other clubs and we are very grateful that the Chairman was on the ball. We have an excellent Manager and assistant and I still say...Upwards and Onwards,
