Bury Broncos 18 Bolton Mets 14
PHIL Bygrave capped a stunning fightback as he crashed over for a late try as the Broncos stunned Bolton to take the derby honours at Philips High School.
The Whitefield-based side came from 14-6 down with 17 minutes to play to secure a memorable win against their local rivals in the battle of North West Men’s Group B’s bottom two.
Bury started strongly and scored early on when the influential Chris Ready’s cross-field kick was grounded by player-coach Paul Bullough.
It did not take long for the winless Mets to hit back though, with two unconverted tries from Pierce Sherrington.
Bury began the second half strongly and, after a sustained spell of pressure, the Mets gave away a penalty and Ready slotted over.
But Bolton extended their lead further when Adam Ryan escaped a number of tackles to score under the posts and Sherrington added the extras.
Time was running out for the Broncos but another Ready penalty brought them within one score of the visitors. Ready’s kick was then fielded by Rick Brogan who crashed over to score, but Ready missed the conversion to leave Bury trailing 14-12.
And, with just three minutes left, Ready made amends when he chipped over for Bygrave to gather and go under the sticks, and Ready added the extras, to seal Bury’s first victory of the season.
