EUROPEAN Blues Award nominee Starlite Campbell Band is playing a special homecoming gig tomorrow.

Frontman Simon Campbell will be back in his hometown as part of The Mince Pie Tour, with special guests The Mighty Revelators when he takes to the stage at The Met.

The four piece band steeped in British blues, recently headlined the Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival in Australia, and Simon says he is relishing being back in Bury.

Simon said: "I fondly remember playing at the previous incarnation of The Met, Summerseat Players in Ramsbottom, The Albert Halls in Bolton and The Ramsbottom Festival in 2015.

"The audiences were always fantastic and we had a ball.

"Having travelled halfway around the world to headline a major festival in Australia, I can’t wait to play a gig on my home turf and see everyone again."

Whilst "down under" Simon also met up with fellow Radcliffe born musician Matt Schofield who was headlining the Friday night at the festival.

“It was great to finally catch up with Matt who is one of the UK’s finest guitarists. We share the same keyboard player Jonny Henderson and in between geeking out about guitars and gear, we also discovered that we were born in the same hospital! There must have been something in the water at Fairfield!!” he added.

Simon fronts the band with Suzy Starlite, the two married who after a whirlwind musical romance released their debut album Blueberry Pie last year to rave reviews worldwide and a prestigious nomination for Best Album in the European Blues Awards.

Bury-born Campbell was also nominated for a British Blues Award in 2011, and has featured in a number of local bands over the years, including Whitefire, The Disciples, The Method, Roadrunner and Little Brother.

The band describe their sound as British Blues in a similar vein to Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and early Led Zeppelin, with "contemporary songs inspired by real life and real people".

For a taste of what to expect of the band’s live performance, co-artistic Director of Wangaratta Festival Frank Davidson said: "The Starlite Campbell Band did more than rock the blues big top, the musical interplay, communication with the audience and get off your arse dance sounds and styles ensured the blues crowd as well as the band had a fantastic experience on Saturday night. The Starlite Campbell band's debut at Wangaratta was an absolutely overwhelming success indeed!"

Simon and Suzie had been recording, playing and touring in bands for many years until they met in 2012, when Starlite asked Campbell to join her band to play guitar. The love extended past each other’s playing and the duo were wed in 2014, forming their new joint band, Starlite Campbell, in January 2016.

Suzie studied media and performance at Salford University and soon joined folk rockers Megiddo, who released an EP in 1994 followed by an album 1996 and toured extensively on the UK folk circuit.

Simon is a guitar player, vocalist, songwriter and record producer. Following a number of original bands he was signed to Polydor Records in the early 90's and released an album with his band Little Brother. After the band split he went on to form the Disciples and released an album in 1994.

In 2011 Simon was nominated in the Best Vocalist category in the British Blues Awards 2011 following the release of his debut solo album ThirtySix. In 2014 he released his second solo album, The Knife which reflected Simon's increasing love of acoustic music from both sides of the Atlantic.

Along with Simon and Suzy, the band features Jonny Henderson on keyboard and Steve Gibson on drums.

The concert will be held in The Met’s Derby Hall on Friday December 14.

Tickets are priced at £17 and are available online at themet.org.uk.
