I see that our MP David Chaytor is keen to improve bio-diversity by advocating that every home, garden and backyard should have a pond.

I congratulate him for his environmental concern and hope that all local politicians are concerned.

If the environment needs such drastic help, why is the park off Castlecroft Road earmarked for industrial development?

It is an area with grassland, hundreds of mature trees and shrubs and a large reed bed that could easily be dredged to help waterfowl.

The Irwell Trail runs along the riverbank and could be linked up to the Burrs Valley.

Even thousands of ponds would not compensate for the loss of this park, where the surveyors are presently at work.

Is this a case of political inconsistency?

Central Park in New York is extremely valuable land, but is considered to be an asset to the city. Air quality, wildlife and many leisure activities are important. We have our equivalent in Bury, but it is going to be concreted over.
