ELDERLY residents are celebrating a parking victory after they claimed nearby workers were jamming their road with parked cars.

They had argued that the parking chaos in Shakespeare Avenue, off Manchester Road, was potentially life-threatening.

And they highlighted how in September, 2012, fire engines were forced to park on the main road when responding to a chip pan fire as the avenue was blocked to them by parked cars..

Now a residential parking scheme will be introduced by Six Town Housing.

Householders say they had often been left with nowhere to park when employees of nearby businesses used the avenue to park.

Resident Anne Neary, aged 73, said: “When I received a phone call I really didn't believe it at first. I just hope that we don't have to wait another three years because it has been going on for nine years now.”

Another resident, Mahalah Walker-Floyd, said because most of her neighbours were elderly, she was worried ambulances and emergency services would not be able to access the road.

The parking plan will have to be approved by Bury Council planning committee.

Residents have a grassed area in front of their homes, which they anticipate will be resurfaced to allow them a parking space of their own.
