ABOUT 100 people basked in the sunshine at the annual baking and boules competition in Affetside.

The French boules competition took place on Sunday (June 7) on the village green where revellers also enjoyed French food and wine.

Bakers entered their creations into the Great Affetside Bake Off before they were judged and sold to help raise funds to support the village.

This year's winner of the senior boules competition was Alan Smith, of Affetside, who won the trophy for a second time having previously won it in 2011. Nine-year-old Sam Carroll, of Affetside, won the junior competition.

The bake-off was well supported with 12 cakes entered in the senior category and six in the junior.

The winner of the senior bake off trophy, with a fruit cake was Brian Dobson and joint winners of the junior bake off were four-year-old Jonah and Elijah Mack-Burke, aged two, with their Victoria sponge cake.

Joanne Wilcock, chairman of the Affetside Society, said: “We were blessed with sunny weather and had a great turnout on the village green. The atmosphere was relaxed and everyone enjoyed the day.

“It was lovely to welcome our MP David Nuttall and his wife Susan plus two of our ward coucillors Cllrs Yvonne Wright and Iain Gartside to the event.

“The Affetside Society would like to thank the local pubs and businesses who donated some generous raffle prizes.
