FIREFIGHTERS have urged people to keep safe in the kitchen after they were called to a fire at a house in Elton.

A smoke alarm sounded at the property in Henley Close at about noon today after the occupant, a woman in her 30s, left a plastic tray on top of the hobs, which had been switched on.

A Fire Service spokesman said: "Three pumps were sent to the scene.

"The fire was out on arrival as a neighbour had used a wet blanket to put it out before we got there.

"The smoke alarms worked, which meant damage was kept to a minimum and nobody was hurt.

"However, we would encourage people to ensure nothing is put on top of the hob, as this kind of hazard can result from that.

"We have been to fires where people have left laundry or their coat on top of the cooker, so keep the hobs clear."
