A POWER cut has affected Bury town centre and led to the closure of a secondary school.
Bury Church of England High School had to close its doors this morning and send pupils home after the electricity went off.
The Haslam Road school's head teacher, Rev Craig Watson said: "The power went off this morning and we were in a position where we were unable to feed the children."
Mr Watson explained the fridges were without power and the water system was not able to refill. The power cut also meant the fire alarms did not work.
He said: "We have 823 young people in the building and if something happens we would have no way of alerting them all quickly.
"I discussed it with the governors and the decision was taken to close the school."
He said the school would be open as normal tomorrow.
Power is back on at the school now but a number of other buildings in the town centre, including the town hall are experiencing supply problems.
Electricity North West has been contacted for a comment. The company has Tweeted that most customers are back up and running.
