A POIGNANT concert will be held to remember and celebrate the contribution of all who served their countries in the First World War.

Visitors to Bury Parish Church tonight will hear some of the stories of local surviving civilians. Family members of veterans are also due to attend.

The evening gathering will give visitors the opportunity to remember the war-fallen and the hundreds of people who supported them in conflict, including engineers, miners, steel workers, munitions workers, nurses and clerical staff.

Interspersed among the stories will be poems and narratives, bound together with a selection of music.

Bury Choral Society will perform a number of pieces at the gathering, including Dona Nobis Pacem by Vaughan Williams, Greater Love Hath No Man by John Ireland, Requiem Aeternamby by Herbert Howells, and Rest in Peace by local composer Peter Skellern.

The concert begins at 7.30pm.
