A PACKED school hall watched on as the class of 2018 leavers graduated from the Derby High School.

Visitors indulged in canapés and drinks as they viewed the school art exhibition prior to the annual awards evening.

Special guest, MP for Bury North, James Frith, delivered a speech that encouraged the young people to take responsibility and become leaders.

The school also enjoyed performances of 'Come Alive' from the Derby Dancers and 'Celebrate' by Derby Brass Ensemble.

During a speech, headteacher Helen Hubert gave praise to the students and reflected on the school's achievements over the past year.

She said: "To all our prize winners, you are an extremely capable and talented group of young people. The recipients of these awards have made an invaluable contribution to the school and deserve their moment to shine on stage.

"I have really enjoyed working with you and getting to know you. I wish each and every one of you good luck in your future endeavours. I hope you will enjoy safe travels, go out and make your mark on the world and come back and share your stories."

She added: "One of our biggest accomplishments in 2017/18 has to be the creation of a STEAM Garden. This project grew from the Student Council’s request to have improved seating facilities outside. The garden has been designed by our students for our students and includes an outdoor learning space, a performance area, a mini-orchard and of course – seating.

"We planted a garden at The Derby High School for our students because we believe in their future potential and we hope that you continue to grow and bear fruit over the years to come."

This year, awards were handed out to the top achiever of each subject, and to those who had made the most progress.

Awards were also given to the top 10 students who had made the most overall progress, for attendance, and GCE/BTEC qualifications.

The following special awards were also given: The Fascinate Award for Science (Sponsored by University of Manchester), Creative Scholar (Sponsored by the Ideas Foundation), Community Involvement (Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Radcliffe), Sports Personality, 7Rs Role Model and Most Resilient Student.

The final two awards were given for overall excellence and progress.
