A DRIVER was taken to Fairfield General Hospital after a collision which left his vehicle upturned on its roof.

A red hatchback collided with a parked car in Market Street, Bury, at the junction with Parkhills Road, and ended up on its roof.

The driver had managed to get himself out of his car prior to the arrival of the emergency services.

Police, paramedics and two fire engines were called to the scene shortly after 11pm.

Tony Wellock, watch manager at Whitefield fire station, said: "We were initially called to a person trapped in a vehicle following a collision in Parkhills Road.

"When we arrived, a car was on its roof in the middle of the road but there was no one trapped. The driver had managed to get out of the vehicle.

"The airbags had deployed and the dust was creating a lot of smoke.

"A lot of people had gathered. People were giving him water."

Firefighters from Bury were also called to the scene.

A member of the fire crew at Bury said: "The driver had managed to get himself out of the car. Paramedics decided to take him to hospital as a precaution due to the nature of the incident.

"We cordoned off the scene."

The road was shut off in both directions until police arrived. Fire crews were in attendance for about 45 minutes.

Resident Shahbaz Arif was driving home from work when he saw the car on its roof.

Mr Arif, aged 27, who lives in South Cross Street, Bury, said: "I saw the fire service fire.

"There was a man who was injured. He was being treated by the ambulance service.

"I could see a car in the middle of the road, upside down. The car was completely damaged. There was another vehicle parked on the road that was damaged."

Paramedics were called to the scene.

A spokeswoman for North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said: "We were called to Market Street at 11.10pm.

"We have taken a patient to hospital.

"They were able to get themselves out of the car.

"We were in attendance for about 50 minutes."
