A vehicle has hit a tree after careering off the embankment between junctions four and three northbound.

The driver of the vehicle was trapped in the incident but has been freed by fire crews.

It is not currently known whether anyone has been injured in the crash.

However, it is understood that the emergency services are currently on the scene.

The incident is causing delays and drivers are advised to take around the area.

Highways England tweeted: "#m66 #j4 #simister to #j3 #pilsworth northbound. 1 Veh RTC down embankment. #trafficofficers, @NWmwaypolice , @NWAmbulance and @manchesterfire on scene in Lane 1. Please take care in area."

The incident comes as the motorway is remains shut in both directions after a nearby river burst its banks.
