A GROUP of Bury churches is offering free help to local people after partnering with a national debt counselling charity.
Bury Churches Together, which represents 15 churches across the town, has joined forces with Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to help more than 30 people this year affected by debt.
Representatives from CAP addressed attendees at a special launch event held this month. The meeting was informed that the service will offer support to people in Bury, Radcliffe, Whitefield and Prestwich.
Gordon Clark, Bury CAP Debt Centre manager, said: “Debts can often build up when people experience a life crisis, such as a relationship breaking down, losing a job, ill health, or through bereavement – so often when people are least able to cope with a financial headache.
“We hope over the next few years to help many local people and families, regardless of their age, gender, faith or background, to put their debt nightmares behind them and start a new life. That’s why we’re so excited to be opening a CAP debt centre here in Bury.”
He added that every client has individual meetings with a friendly debt coach, and is offered support until they become debt free. Meanwhile CAP’s head office specialists negotiate with creditors, create a budget and provide further ongoing support.
Nigel Thompson, from Bury Churches Together, said: “If you know things are out of control and you’re stressed, missing meals or sleep, please give CAP a call and let them help you get your life back on track.”
