THE driver of a BMW M3 fled the scene after a crash in Bury town centre.
The high-performance vehicle had collided with barriers in Jubilee Way, near the junction with Tenterden Street.
A fire crew from Whitefield were on their way to another incident when they discovered the crash at about 10.30pm yesterday.
Paul Doggett, crew manager at Whitefield fire station, said: "We stopped to check whether there was anyone in the car. The driver had fled the scene of the crash.
"The car had come to a standstill in the middle of the road, blocking both carriageways. There was lots of debris everywhere.
"Witnesses reported that a driver had collided with the barriers at high speed.
"We made the scene safe. We moved the vehicle off the road using a tirfor cable — similar to a hydraulic jack — and reopened the road to traffic.
"We notified the police."
Crews were in attendance for about 30 minutes.
