BURY North MP James Daly took part in a virtual conference over the weekend, talking about the ongoing dispute in Kashmir.

Mr Daly spoke at the conference on Sunday, which included the President of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Masood Khan.

Since 1947, Pakistan and India have fought several wars over the disputed territory of Kashmir.

Tensions in the region are still high and there have been skirmishes between troops in recent years.

Mr Daly said: "Thousands of my constituents from Bury North trace their roots to Kashmir.

"Their belief is that India now has a choice- it can either continue with the lockdown or support meaningful peace in Kashmir.

“India should end the curfew and focus its attention on preserving human rights, implementing the rule of law and economic development."

Mr Khan has been President of the region since 2016 and has repeatedly brought attention to the situation to the international community.

Mr Daly said that the key message he took away from the Zoom Meeting on Kashmir was the belief that the Indian action constitutes a violation of the U.N. Security Council resolutions on Kashmir and bilateral Pakistan-India agreements, such as the 1972 Shimla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration.

He added: "For me, the most disturbing aspect in Indian Administered Kashmir is the human rights violations, which have not only devastated the region, but also severely tainted India’s image as the world’s largest democracy”.
