A POPULAR event set to take place in Bury has been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Tottington's Big Day Out, which was due to take place on July 4, will no longer be going ahead, organisers confirmed.

The annual family fun day attracts thousands of people for a day of live music, entertainment, food and drink.

However, due to the ongoing pandemic and lockdown measures, the event's organising committee said it has taken the "reluctant" decision to cancel, after taking advice regarding mass gatherings.

Scott Parkinson, chairman of the organising committee, said: "It is with a heavy heart that we have cancelled the event.

"However, we must always have the health and safety of both the public and our volunteers as our main priority.

"The day has become a date in the diary that the whole community looks forward to and we will be back next year — bigger and better."
