POLICE have issued a warning to Bury residents following reports of scammers impersonating police officers calling people around the borough.

Greater Manchester Police officers from Bury North said: "We have received a number of reports whereby suspects are purporting to be police officers in order to scam people out of money.

"The suspects in these scams are often 'Spoofing' the GMP public number 0161 872 5050 to make the call look legitimate. Spoofing is the act of deliberately changing the Caller ID to hide identity or mimic another phone number.

"We do not use this number to call anyone and it should not appear on your caller ID.

"Remember that the police will never ring you and ask you for your bank details or for money."

Police have issued further advice regarding the bogus calls, telling people to hang up if they believe the call to be a scam, and to call 101 to check if the call is indeed genuine.

Furthermore, you can check the callers identity by contacting your neighbourhood policing team.
