AN ENTIRE Bury school class and its teachers are self-isolating after a pupil tested positive for coronavirus.

All 36 Year 6 pupils at Lowercroft Primary School were told not to come in today and to self-isolate for 14 days, the school confirmed.

Two staff members are also quarantining at home.

Speaking to the Bury Times, Headteacher Tessa Farr stressed that she was “100 per cent confident that the class bubble has been secure”.

She added: “Those children have not been in contact with any others within the school building.

“Our staff have been exercising all social distancing guidelines with each other.

“So I’m confident that it is just this bubble.”

It comes after the school in Ashington Drive was informed that one of its Year 6 pupils had tested positive for Covid-19 this morning.

Parents of pupils in the affected year group were then sent a text from the school, at 8.05am today, telling them not to send their children in to class, and to self-isolate them for a fortnight, Mrs Farr said.

In a formal statement, the school's governors said: "We can confirm that a member of the Year 6 class received a positive Covid-19 test result before school started today.

"Each member of the class is now self-isolating.

"We are following the advice of the Local Health Protection Team and all affected parties will be notified of the return to school date as soon as possible.

"The rest of the school remains open and we can reassure parents that we have robust safety measures in place and the children in each class/bubble are not mixing at any time during the school day."

The school is now in communication with Bury Council and Public Health England to ensure it takes the next necessary steps.

Mrs Farr continued: "I'm confident that we are doing everything we possibly can to make sure everybody is safe.

"We let parents know as soon as we knew."

"Siblings of the children who are in Year 6 are allowed to come in to school," she added.

Bury Council has been approached for comment.
