VANDALS broke into Bury Football Club's stadium last night and set fire to a bar.

Gigg Lane has not hosted a game since May 4, 2019 and the club was thrown out of the EFL the following August.

But since then former club workers have took it upon themselves to look after the ground and there have been reports of youths breaking in before.

And last night at around 9.30pm, three fire engines were sent to the stadium after a former staff member found that a blaze had broke out at one of the bars inside the ground, which was started after a quantity of paper was set alight behind.

Whitefield Fire Station watch manager Tony Wellock said the fire happened near a water pipe.

The flames were put out by the leaking water but the crews worked to make the scene safe.

The issue was reported to the police.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "At 9.10pm on Wednesday, February 10, police were called by the fire service responding to a report of a fire at on Gigg Lane, Bury.

"Enquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with information should contact police quoting 2,823 of  February 10 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."
