A FATHER and daughter duo has been honoured for their long-standing service to the Scouts.

Between them, David Fox and Leesa Beckwith have accrued more than 70 years in the St. Josephs Cubs and Scouts and have received The Chief Scouts Long Service award.

Leesa has received an award for 30 years of service, while David is being recognised for his 40 years.

David said: “I started in the Cubs when I was a young boy and wanted to carry on the family tradition, as both of my parents were in the Scouts.

“After teaching engineering in Malawi for a number of years, I came back to the Scouts in 1981 and worked my way up to being an assistant scout leader, then a scout leader and at one point was appointed as a district commissioner.

“My son started in 1985 and did very well. I’m very happy and proud to be recognised, especially to think that people would take the time to recommend me and I am very touched.

“Being a Scout is great for young people because they have the chance to do activities and learn things that they wouldn’t have the opportunity to.”

He added: “My proudest moments as a Scout came when my daughter first got involved, and later when she achieved 30 years of service.”

David’s wife Jane added: “I couldn’t be more proud of their commitment, they’ve both been utterly marvellous.”

Leesa said: “Scouting runs in the family, it’s in the blood, we’re Scouts through and through. We do it because we have a passion for it and its something to give back to the community.

“To see my children, Callum and Conor, on their way to becoming scout leaders fills me with joy and I’m glad scouting is becoming more popular thanks to people like Kate Middleton, Bear Grylls, and Tim Peake.”

Leesa is looking forward to watching future generations take part.
