EIGHTY members of the Territorial Army were called in to construct a ‘floating bridge’ over the river Irwell in 1987.
The bailey bridge was needed until a new crossing at Burrs could be completed. The old bridge was in such a poor state that it had to be closed to traffic and the temporary crossing installed.
The floating bridge would be needed for 30 weeks as the £240,000 steel and reinforced concrete replacement bridge was built.
