Bury Town Hall will fly its flag at half mast in respect to Sir David Amess.

The Conservative MP who represented the Southend West constituency, died after being stabbed while holding a surgery yesterday.

A 25-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

The death of the father of five has prompted tributes to him.

The flag at Bury Town Hall will fly at half mast as part of this.

Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, leader of Bury Council, joined in the tributes.

He said: “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the murder of Sir David, who was Member of Parliament for Southend West.

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this terrible time.

“I will be writing in an official capacity to his family to express the borough’s deepest sympathies and the council flag has been lowered as a mark of respect.

"A book of condolence will be opened at the town hall.”
