TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Bury Council leader whose death was announced earlier today.

Mike Connolly was also Mayor of Bury in 2016-17 and deputy mayor for part of 2018.

His death was announced via social media by his husband Ian Hargreaves. He was 70.

The former headteacher had Mr Hargreaves as his consort during his mayoral year.

Council colleagues and opposition members have paid tributes to the ex-Labour politician, who headed the authority from 2011 to 2016.

Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, the current leader of Bury Council, said: “Mike was Bury through and through.

"A man dedicated to public service and supporting those who needed it most.

"As one of our borough’s longest serving leaders, he achieved a great deal for our towns and leaves a big legacy for the place he loved.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Mike’s partner Ian, his family and friends.”

Cllr Tim Pickstone, the Mayor of Bury, added: “Mike was everything a local councillor should be.

"An outstanding ward councillor, cabinet member, opposition leader, council leader and mayor, he was an example to us all.

"Bury has lost a much-loved local leader and a great advocate. Our love to Mike’s partner Ian, and to Mike’s family, friends and colleagues.”

Cllr Nick Jones, leader of Bury Council's Conservative group, added: "We are very sad to learn of the passing of Mike Connolly.

"During his time on Bury Council he served the residents of East Ward for many years and led the council for a period.

"My thoughts are with his family and friends at this deeply sad time, may he rest in peace."

Mr Connolly, who represented Bury's East ward, resigned from the council in 2019. He was replaced by his deputy, Cllr Rishi Shori.
