A Bury MP has issued a statement which appears to be heavily critical of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Conservative Christian Wakeford, who represents the Bury South constituency which he won at the 2019 election, has said "openness, trust and decency" must come from the top.

The statement comes as pressure grows on the Prime Minister in relation to allegations of a party in May 2020 when lockdown rules relating to Covid were at their most strict.

An email sent by his principal private secretary Martin Reynolds invited 100 people to the gathering and urged them to bring their own booze.

In response to this Mr Wakeford has issued what appears to be a critical tweet.

It said: "How do you defend the indefensible? You can’t.

"It’s embarrassing and what’s worse is it further erodes trust in politics when it’s already low."

"We need openness, trust and honesty in our politics now more than ever and that starts from the top."
