A TOTTINGTON resident was forced to extinguish a fire after a group of vandals set their neighbours wheelie bins alight.

Two green wheelie bins on Booth Street were left decimated after a group of vandals  set fire to them last night.

Rubbish from the bins was left strewn across the ground, while fencing behind the bins were scorched.

Both wheelie bins had large holes burned into them with much of the plastic melted away.

As the resident who owned the bins are on holiday, a neighbour was forced to step in to put out the flames.

Posting on Facebook they said: "Tottington residents please be vigilant. A group of youths have just set fire to some bins behind Booth Street opposite the small park.

"Thankfully with it being a warm evening and with the windows open we were alerted and managed to put the fire out; otherwise with its location it could have very quickly become something far worse.

"Thankfully the worst was two bins reduced to puddles of plastic and some scorched fence panels"

Other residents expressed their concern at the incident with one calling for increased Police presence in the area.

One resident said, "These idiotic vandals need stopping before someone’s house gets burned down or someone gets hurt. We need more of a police presence around here before this escalates."

The incident has been reported to the police.
