A vote of confidence is set to take place to determine Prime Minister Boris Johnson's future - and Bury MPs have given their reactions.

The vote of no confidence is triggered when letters of no confidence from 15 per cent of the parliamentary party are sent to Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee.

The vote will take place in Westminster between 6pm and 8pm today, Monday, under a secret ballot.

If at least 50 per cent of Conservative MPs vote they have "no confidence" the Prime Minister will lose, and a leadership contest will be triggered.

Bury’s MPs have now shared their thoughts on the situation.

Bury South MP Christian Wakeford, who infamously defected from the Tories to Labour earlier this year, made his views about the PM very clear in a statement.

He said: “We have a Prime Minister that is a threat to democracy, and I would implore all of my former colleagues to vote to remove him this evening.

“I would hope they would put country before Party and do what is right. That means the removal of Boris Johnson as Prime Minister and a general election.”

However, Conservative Bury North MP James Daly is still supporting the PM and has expressed his disappointment over the development.

In a statement on his website he said: “I am very disappointed about what has happened.

"I know from the many conversations I have had with constituents here in Bury, Ramsbottom and Tottington on the doorsteps and the letters and emails sent to me, that many people share these concerns.

“However, I also have to consider what the country as a whole needs now in the face of rising costs of living and a precarious international situation.

“I think the responsible thing to do then is to continue to support this government in tackling these problems.

“I can assure you, rightly, that the government’s focus is and always will be to deliver on the priorities of the British people: strengthening our economy, creating jobs and levelling up the whole United Kingdom.

“The trust of the British people in our democracy is very important.

"That is why this government is committed to repaying that trust by levelling up and uniting our country.”

Mr Daly also mentioned that Ukraine’s President Zelensky said: “The leadership of the United Kingdom, in providing our country with all the necessary assistance in terms of defence, as well as leadership in sanctions policy, will go down in history forever.”

He continues to list a number of policies in addition to the Ukraine crisis and the Levelling up agenda.

He added: “In my view, the government must get on with the job at hand, and I will continue to hold them to account in delivering on these key priorities for the people of Bury, Ramsbottom and Tottington.”
