A crash has closed a lane on the A56 causing hour-long delays.

Currently traffic is backed up by around 7 miles, after a collision on the northbound A56 near Edenfield in Lancashire has closed lane two.

The incident was first reported by Highways North West just after 5.30pm.

A spokesperson for National Highways North West said: "Lane 2 is closed on the A56 northbound in Lancashire between M66/A680/A676 and A682 near Edenfield due to a collision.

"There are currently delays of 60 mins and approximately seven miles of congestion.

"Please allow extra time if travelling in the area."

Traffic website Inrix said: A56 Northbound partially blocked, queueing traffic due to accident between M66 (Ramsbottom Junction, Edenfield) and A682 (Bent Gate Roundabout, Townsend Fold). Congestion to M66 J1."

All lanes were reported to be open at around 7pm.

Lancs Road Police have called for patience as the traffic begins to clear.
