Residents have expressed concerns after a mound of rubbish was dumped in a car park in Bury.

The mess at the car park off Wadebridge Drive included a couch, shelving, children’s toys and various other items which had been left near Dow Lane Park for over a week.

The offence has also been noticed by dog walkers near Elton Reservoir as one photo shows the waste that has been sitting there "for months".

Facebook users shared their concerns that it may correlate to the prices of taking "commercial vehicles" to the tip, whereas others warn of unlicensed removal services.

One said:  “Unless you have a car or large people carrier it’s virtually impossible to use the tip. Hence the fly-tipping will continue. No van’s pickups or anything that resembles a commercial vehicle.”

Another person added added: “The council should stop charging people to tip rubbish (with van’s and larger vehicles) problem solved.”

It is free for cars to visit the tip with a maximum of 52 visits a year for cars with single axle trailers and18 visits a year for cars with double axel trailers.

However, pick-up trucks, estate vans, city vans and chassis vans, are limited to 18 visits per year and you must get a permit.

Cllr Dene Vernon said: “Fly-tipping is an issue throughout Bury.

"Fly-tippers can face heavy fines and a prison sentence. Vehicles used to commit offences can also be seized.

“Residents are advised not to use unlicensed waste carriers and can be fined up to £400 if they pass their waste to one.

“Bury Council has fly-tipping enforcement officers who are able to issue fixed penalty notices and investigate cases. If people are aware of fly-tipping they can report it via the council's website or I and my fellow councillors will gladly do it.”

Cllr Jackie Harris has since requested the removal of the fly-tipping off Wadebridge Drive and asks residents to report flytipping incidences directly to her.

Cllr Harris added: “The tip at Cemetery Road is very well organised and attended.

"Yes, I acknowledge that there are busy times, usually at weekends.

"I cannot accept that it acts as a deterrent and encourages fly-tipping. This occurs as a result of irresponsible behaviour.”
