Firefighters from Bolton and across Greater Manchester were scrambled to the scene of a four-vehicle crash on the M60 this morning.

Police and ambulance were also on the scene, and five people have since been taken to hospital.

The drivers and passengers all managed to escape from their vehicles before fire crews arrived.

This resulted in two lanes being closed on the M60 anti-clockwise between J16 Swinton and J15 on the M61, where there was severe congestion.

Fire crews from Agecroft, Farnworth and Blackley were called at around 11:20am, and stayed to make the scene safe, for around 50 minutes.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At approximately 11.20am on Sunday, 7th August, firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the M60, anticlockwise, between junctions 16 and 15.

“Fire engines from Agecroft, Farnworth and Blackley stations quickly attended the scene.

“The collision involved four vehicles.

“All occupants of the vehicles self-rescued before fire crews arrived at the scene. Five people were conveyed to hospital by colleagues from NWAS.

“Firefighters worked to make the scene safe and were in attendance for around 50 minutes.”

Congestion now appears to have eased between these junctions.
