A hopeful Bury teenager is raising money for a life-changing bionic arm after feeling like she "never fit in".

Gemma Tomlinson, 17, has been accepted for a bionic prosthetic arm which she believes will change her life.

The arm, made by Open Bionics in Bristol, costs £10,000, a goal Gemma is determined to meet.

She said: "Growing up I never felt I fit in with others my age as I was born with a lower arm deficiency in my right arm.

“Throughout my childhood, I had to adjust the way I did daily activities.

"As I grow into being a young adult I can’t help but see how helpful a prosthetic arm would be for everyday use.

“That could be to help me with simple things such as tying my shoelaces or helping me to drive when I start learning.”

In August, Gemma spent two days at Open Bionics' Bristol site being assessed and measured for them to make the prosthetic arm.

She said she had a great experience but needs to hit the five-figure fundraising goal before they start making it.

She said: “I have been lucky enough to be offered a prosthetic called the hero arm.

“I know that this prosthetic arm would help me in every aspect of my life including getting a job after I finish college as I am hoping to join the uniformed public services.”

Gemma has thanked everyone for their donations so far as she is just over the halfway mark at £6,590.

There have been over 100 donations so far.
